Food Watch and I'm OK Proficiency Badge Course 2007

Soaring Eagles conducted the Food Watch and I'm OK Proficiency Badge Courses for Yishun District Cluster 3 during the June Holidays. The Food Watch Course included a partnership with McDonald's at Civic Centre where the managers took time to give the participants of the course a guided tour through the kitchen.

The Cub Scouts learnt that the trays are washed in Chlorine every 2 hours, that the food prep staff use a different coloured glove for cooked and uncooked food and that food prepared are only kept for 10 minutes in the warmer, after which they are discarded. This is knowledge that not every McDonald's customer may know, but it went a long way to show how food companies like McDonald's put into practice what was taught through the course.

30 Cubs from Soaring Eagles Scouts and 31 other Cubs from Cluster Schools attained the Food Watch Proficiency awarded by the National Environment Agency.
26 Cubs from Soaring Eagles Scouts and 23 other Cubs from Cluster Schools were awarded the I’m OK Proficiency awarded by the National Environment Agency.

What do the Scout Names Mean? (Part 2)

Part 1 found here.

Benjamin Soh (Steadfast Beaver)

Steadfast: Firm and unwavering, loyal, resolved
Beaver: Overseer, Strong will, Determination, Builder, Protector
Benjamin has been a Scout since 2004. Since then, he has participated enthusiastically in various activities within his unit in Bukit Panjang Government High Eagles Scouts, and beyond his unit, in various Cub Scout units like South View Primary and Marsiling Primary. He personifies the Scout Law by being always eager and ever ready to help others. His strong leadership qualities has shone in his unit where he was appointed the Senior Patrol Leader in 2006, in the National Day Parade where he was appointed the Contingent Commander (Reserve) in 2007.

His strong will to pursue Scouting despite objections, his determination to win support for his cause has certainly been nothing less than remarkable. Since joining the Soaring Eagles family of Scouts in February as a Venture Scout, he has overseen the running of the Scout programme on Saturdays becoming the big brother who protects and trains the younger Scouts. He has overseen and is currently overseeing some unit initiatives and projects. I am sure these would turn out to be fruitful learning experiences not just for him but for the Scouts as well.

Hazmi Aris (Humourous Coyote)
Humourous: Amusing, witty
Coyote: Recognizing own mistakes, Ability to laugh at oneself, Clowning around

Hazmi was a Cub Scout since 2001 who was later appointed Sixer in 2003. He became a Scout in 2005. He is a humble leader who is always able to recognise his mistakes and handles each difficult situation with a clear head and a calm disposition. He is easy going and is able to laugh at himself; yet he never fails to reflect and learn from his mistakes.

Since joining the Soaring Eagles family of Scouts in February as a Venture Scout, he has overseen the running of the Scout programme on Saturdays becoming the big brother who brings joy and laughter as he trains the younger Scouts. He has overseen and is currently overseeing some unit initiatives and projects. I am sure these would turn out to be fruitful learning experiences not just for him but for the Scouts as well.
