Pioneers, Skaters and Bikers

Its the end of January already and the 6th day of the Year of the Ox. As always the last week of the month is half-training, half-social with many unexpected and unplanned events in between. We spent the day doing knots and mini-pioneering at Bishan Park. Rest times were spent in rampant madness at the playground adjacent from our training hut. You'd have to check out facebook for video evidence.Right after training was a little Chinese celebration of "Lau Yu Sheng" followed by our intended social event: Cycling, but that too took some of us out on skates instead. A random day indeed. After a nice workout, we were off for dinner at AMK Hub.

Volvo Ocean Race - End point of Leg 3 in Singapore!

Race for the Environment is a collaboration between World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM), the United Nations Environment Programme and the Volvo Ocean Race and aims to encourage young people to take action for the environment in their daily life.

On Friday, 16 January, more than 400 scouts from across Singapore gathered at Volvo Ocean Race Village at Sentosa Cove to celebrate the Race for the Environment and the Singapore Scouts Day.SE Cubs and Scouts did not miss out on such an educational and interactive opportunity, exploring booths on Marine Conservation which featured turtle conservation and coral reef protection. We also spoke to volunteers from Team Seagrass and Raffles Museum clearing our misconception that marine conservation is a boring task.We also got the opportunity to speak to the sailors in a special Q&A session after which, we got free Movenpick ice-cream; while others put their muscles to work in the popular grinding challenge. We also got to watch a special video and spoke to Edward, a non-sailing part of the VOR Family over orange juice and some cookies. Edward let us have a glimpse into the lives of the sailors on board through photographs. Finally, many of us put pen to paper in a giant declaration of intent that day, making our commitment to improving the environment.Three of our Cubs were invited to board one of the boats for a photoshoot which was then featured on the VOR Website. What an honour!

The 2009 Year of the Ox Zodiac Series of Stamps was launched yesterday by MP for Jalan Besar, Minister Denise Phua. Soaring Eagles Scouts were there to welcome here with the traditional Adiji Yell much to her delight and personal applause.
After she officially launched the stamps, and the opening of the exhibition, it was our turn to view the exhibition of very interesting "ang pow", postcards, badge and stamp collections of the Zodiac Series. This was followed by a sumptuous buffet dinner.

Hike Training Stage II: 16 km

Our second hike was planned by our GSL and was the most interesting thus far, taking us through the city area and ending at Marina Barrage. The route was not easy to navigate, especially due to the thick concrete jungle. We managed to find our way in the end, but not without enraging the Fiery Serpent. Ooops! ;)We were glad to have been able to complete this hike and under the strong recommendation of our GSL, we went to check out the Water Exhibition. Indeed the exhibits were uber cool and interactive. We learnt much more than we expected to that day.
