The Pride of SE

After years of Cub Scouting, these Cub Scouts who are the Creme de la Creme of our Pack are in the final stages of their preparation for the Akela Award 2009. They have come a long way and I am very proud of them indeed.

I am proud because I know it has been a very tough journey and to have braved the strict requirements that I demand, and the difficulties in balancing academic achievement, family and Scouting are not easy feats for 12-year olds.

I wish you all the best... because the best is yet to come!

Food Watch - Kitchen Tour

We're now at McDonald's, Woodlands Causeway having our kitchen tour. We heard that the trip this year is much better than the previous one as it was more interactive! Some of us had the opportunity to assemble our very own Cheeseburger, and dispense our own 2 and half twirl ice cream cone! Some of the interesting facts we learnt were that McDonald's used branded fries called Russell Burbank Fries imported from USA. These fries must be fried while in a frozen state so as to ensure it is crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Fries which have thawed cannot be used.I learnt how McDonald's took food hygiene seriously. The crew are required to wash their hands thoroughly from fingertips to elbows once every hour. Everything is colour-coded to prevent any cross-contamination! The kitchen crew used colour-coded tongs for different types of food. Red tongs for Beef, Green for Chicken, Blue for Fish. The gloves used for uncooked food were blue and those used to handle cooked food were transparent. The rags they used for cleaning up in the kitchen workstations had a brown stripe while those used in the customer area had a blue one.We also checked out the storage area as well as the freezer. It was so cold, keeping uncooked food between -18 to -24 degrees Celsius. To manage all the food, the crew also practised First In, First Out (F.I.F.O.) which means the items that arrived first would be used first. All items were clearly dated. This tour teaches me about good food hygiene, but better yet, this tour allowed me to appreciate my burger more. It goes without saying, we had a fantastic meal of McChicken, Apple Pie and free-flow Orange juice.Special thanks to Saiful, Siti and Carol who made our trip a very enriching one. Also to the friendly managers and crew on duty... you rock!

Tomorrow, Part 2 - The lecture and bacteria cultivation experiment.

I'm OK

The SSA-Disney/Pixar UP Badges have arrived. At the Mozzie Buster Course today, the badges were distributed to all who participated in the activities along with a personalised copy of the "Scouting Chronicles".

Serpent instructed all that the logbook is to be used at all meetings from today, and that the UP Badges should be kept as a souvenir and not be sewn onto the uniform. This is because Disney/Pixar has given SE the rights to produce a special edition badge to commemorate our 12th Anniversary! That one would be a nice badge to put onto the uniform. For now, we will not reveal what that badge would look like ;)

The Mozzie Buster Course was conducted by Akela and the 84 Cubs were sent off to hunt for breeding grounds and to eradicate them from the face of the Earth! Tomorrow, I'm OK Proficiency.

Thank You, Staedtler...

for your kind sponsorship!
